How to write a Surname Query

Finding family tree connections is one of the main goals of a genealogist and posting on the surname forums can be one of those most effective ways to make these connections.  BUT it takes a carefully crafted query to get results.

Here are five tips for writing an effective surname query:

1. Be Specific – concentrate on one main surname per query

2.  Add dates and specific locations

3.  Put the Surname in CAPITAL letters in the subject line

4.  List what you know

5.  List what you are looking for

And remember to include your contact information with a current email address that you plan to have for several years.

Happy Hunting,

Joan
